AH Fox sterlingworth
AH Fox sterlingworth
Hello everyone!
I am new to this forum. This is my first post. I just inherited a AH Fox Sterlingworth double barrel shotgun. Ther serial # is 143xx. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the manufacture year. The barrel is in good condition it has some rust on it. The wood on the gun is in good condition. The gun was found in my wife's grandfathers garage after being there for many many years. We are going to keep the gun just wanted to get some history about it. Any help would be appreciated. It is stamped on the right side A.H. Fox

Dolfans: You will need to order a letter from Mr. Callahan as only the info on graded Foxs is available on the member's site. You will need to furnish him the complete SN, gauge, barrel length, etc.

Re: AH Fox sterlingworth
If your gun is really a five-digit serial number 143xx, it is a graded (A to F-Grade) Ansley H. Fox double, not a Sterlingworth. What is written on the sides of the receiver? "Ansley H. Fox", "Sterlingworth" or "Fox-Sterlingworth"? What is written on the top of the right barrel? "Krupp Fluid Steel Made By", Chromox Fluid Compressed Steel", "Sterlingworth Fluid Compressed Steel" or "Special Alloy -- Forged Steel"?
For us to really offer you any information it would be best if you posted some good digital pictures of your gun.
Graded 12-gauge guns had serial numbers from 1 to somewhere in the 35xxx range. 12-gauge Sterlingworths were numbered from 50000 to 161556.

To post pictures on our site, first you need to load them on a picture hosting site like Photobucket, the insert the direct link between the on this site
You can email them to me and I'll post them. david.noreen@comcast.net

Re: AH Fox sterlingworth
I am going to try it now. On the sides of the gun it has Ansley H Fox in a ribbon etching.

Re: AH Fox sterlingworth
You have what is known as a Drawbolt model Fox-Sterlingworth. There was a nest of them in the 143xxx serial number range. There was a good article on them by Tom Kidd in The Double Gun Journal, Volume Eight, Issue 1. Here is what one in good condition looks like --

A posting just prior to George's was deleted by the moderator. It wasn't offensive but also was not pertinent to our group. Also a link was included which may or may not be suspect. I didn't try it myself.

Re: AH Fox sterlingworth
I have a drawbolt gun #13353X. Do we know what the oldest serial number for a drawbolt gun is?
Mine is a 12 gauge with 30" barrels.

Re: AH Fox sterlingworth
There is no Ansley H on the side. My wife's uncle has the gun and was describing the markings to me. I miss understood him when he was telling me he saw other guns that looked similar with those markings. I am picking up the gun and will post some better photo's of the markings. The serial number is the five digit 14395. Do you know what year that would have been manufactured.

Re: AH Fox sterlingworth
I brightened up the picture showing the top tang and it is the wide top tang of a drawbolt model Fox-Sterlingworth, and the stock is the right capless pistol grip of many Savage-era Fox-Sterlingworths. The poster is obviously missing a digit out of the serial number.
