My great-great uncle brought this in the 1920’s. It was my father’s favorite field gun. I believe it was made in 1916.

What a great inheritance!! An early Gough style AE-Grade 20-gauge with a straight grip and 30-inch barrels!! Hard to get much better than that.

A few years back Savage Arms sent all the Ansley H. Fox production cards to the McKracken Research Library at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming. You can get a letter from them --

https://centerofthewest.org/explore/fir ... ds/savage/

The A.H. Fox Collectors Association, Inc. have photocopies of the production cards and members get a jpeg of one card with a membership and can get additional ones for $25. Downside is for over 90% of the cards we only have photocopies of the face of the card. Cody is the only source for info on the back.

Keep in mind that when that gun was made, the heaviest 20-gauge shells available were 2 1/2 drams of bulk smokeless powder or 20-grains of dense smokeless powder (such as Infallible or Ballistite) pushing 7/8 ounce of shot.

Larry4, I’ll bet it was your father’s favorite. That’s a wonderful gun. A grades are beautiful, and a 30” 20 ga. is a rare gem. I’ll bet it handles like a dream. Enjoy!

It belonged to my Uncle Donald, my grandfathers brother. Donald was a very successful general contractor in the Seattle area. He never saw the need to learn to swim. At 6’7” he thought he could get out of the water. He was found under a log in the DeChutes River in Oregon after he fell from his boat.
