Was wondering why this gun disappeared off the auction, was hoping to take a run at it

If my memory is correct, this gun is shorter and lighter than your pawn shop DE. Will you be using this gun for waterfowl, or do you have something else in mind?

Jeff: I plan to use it as a pheasant gun. I have a young Lab coming along so I have joined a preserve Waleback Farms here in the Finger Lakes. Also I plan to get back to SD during our duck hunting season split.

Thanks yea kinda like your 28" XE. IC/Full should be a good combo. The gun is mechanically perfect, the barrels measure excellent, .032 min walls and full length full taper chokes, bores typical of the period .726, The gun was restocked by Fox in the mid 20's in my opinion. The shape of the comb is the give away plus the checkering pattern is mid 20's. The stock was fitted with a white line pad, a repaired toe crack and some kind of spray finish I believe done in the 50's or 60's. The gun is off to Brian Dudley for a restoration of the wood. It's going to be a very nice hunting gun.
Tom the weight is 7lbs 1oz, it must have been a error when recording the weight on the card.

Sorry Stan, I contacted the auctioneer and asked if the consignor would accept an offer before the auction. The consignors were three family members and they said would consider an offer. My first offer was rejected and my second offer was accepted. I ended up paying market price, no great bargain but it's a DE one of 104.

I hope you can trace it's history, I'm curious to know if it was originally ordered by a person in PA or where is that Hdw Store?

That should be a dandy bird gun Craig. I've handled Jeff's XE in SD, I'm not a 12 ga guy but I'll admit it was a sweet handling gun. Would love for you to be able to make the Puffer's soon so we can add another Fox to Fox day.

Well….. 2024 was a good year for me. Right around the first of the year I took delivery of a nice 30” 12 ga. XE with a straight grip. The gun was purchased from a famous waterfowler in this group and I’m pleased to say I killed a few mallards with it. I think it’s choked .025/.025 and the single trigger is nice for a gloved hand. The weight is 7 lbs. 4 oz.

While at the Southern I purchased (from a member) an early A 16 ga. with 26” barrels. I don’t know why I bought it, but gosh it’s cute. Weighing just 5 lbs. 9 oz. and choked IC and Mod, it’s a lot of fun on the clays course. Hopefully it will find a woodcock or grouse next Fall.

In May I received a tip from a well respected member which led me to my dream gun. It’s a 28” 12 ga. XE choked Mod and Full. Weighing in at 6 lbs. 11 oz. it’s a delight to carry, and is a pheasant killing machine. I can honestly say I took 12 South Dakota roosters with this beauty.

Purchasing these 3 guns was nice, but somewhat bittersweet. They make such a well balanced collection that I may never need to buy another Fox.

Great guns Jeff! That early A-Grade 16-gauge is a nice mate to my favorite 20-gauge.

Hey Dave - just curious.

Many years ago, I had an early style A grade Fox 20 gauge SN 200061 that according to my notes, I sent it to Bill Headrick, the elder in Cape Girardeau MO. I paid $225 for it in 1976.

It had 26 inch barrels and choked Full and Full. Neat gun for sure. How close is your SN to that one? Yeah, just curious.

My gun came from an old Annapolis, Maryland, quail hunter. I got it at the Great Southern Weapons Fair at Richmond in 1992. Traded a NID Field Grade 20-gauge and a bit of cash for it.

I handled 200061 in Cape Girardeau and It is pictured on page 143 of "The Finest Book in the World."
