Jeff, one can only assume that is what they were doing. I guess it is possible that they were far better shots than the rest of us and needed the extra challenge of “sighting” the birds!
Tom, I have removed it and other than a little oil and gunk, there is a small little hole for the screw not much larger than 1/16”. Should very easily disappear.
