I hunted around Hayes Kansas with flushers many many years ago. Was carrying a Merkel 16 gauge sxs in those days. Pheasants were the game of choice. It was either great or nothing, but the great is what I remember better.

Unfortunately the pheasant numbers seem to be going down every year. Quail numbers on WHIA are down as well. Still can get into a few coveys on some private ground we have access to.
A couple of things I’ve heard, that pheasants can’t self regulate their internal temperature when it’s over 104 ambient. If there are water pivots in the area this can help sustain them through the heat.
Talking to a local told me to look for meadowlarks in the milo fields. If no larks, the field has probably been sprayed with Glyphosate to help dry the crop. So no birds will be feeding there. Makes sense to me.

Heat is tough on all upland birds. Probably only thing worse is drought. Mother nature can be brutal.
