Yet Another XE 20 ga. Hunt

Post by AmarilloMike »

This picture is from Sunday. Was hunting Southwests of Brownfield, Texas, just a mile East of the New Mexico border.

Lots of birds. I hunted with three young men with sharp eyesight and quick reflexes and young dogs. And then there was me. Two carried Remington 1100 20gas, one carried a Beretta OU 20ga. But my dogs and the old Fox 20 pulled their weight.

Best,

Mike

Looks like a lot of fun. I grew up in Brownfield, and probably hunted that same land with my old Stevens double. Blue quail are fun, but I don't like to run like I used to. I hope to go north of Roswell this weekend and use my "new" Fox 16. Hopefully all the rattlesnakes have gone to sleep with our snow.

Wow, Mike! How many of your dogs did you bring for the hunt?

Hi J7. Four or five in the pile are blues. I have had three dogs bitten by rattlesnakes. It takes the fun out of warm weather hunting. But I didn't worry on this trip. Lots of snow left from the Goliath blizzard.

I grew up on a farm between Dimmitt and Hereford. I misstated where we were hunting. It was Northwest of Plains which would put it West Northwest of Brownfield.

Hi Jim:

I took four; Red, Molly, Ginger, and Jazzy. In addition we had two labs, a setter, and an American Brittany. I rotated my four. The other dogs pretty much hunted the whole day.

Hey Tom:

I'm open minded. If a guy wants to date men or run labs I think that is just fine. :D

I went again this afternoon. Hunted from 1:30 to about 5:45. Just ran my thirteen month old Jazzy. She found seven coveys, pointed six, flushed one. She also had half a dozen single points. She is a competent dead bird hunter. Not much of a retriever, will have to send her to trained-retrieve school when she is older.

Thanks for the nice comments.

Best,

Mike

I used to hunt on a place owned by Bob White, north of Plains. Never saw one there, but we ran down a ton of blues. That's one reason I waited until this weekend, Goliath put all the snakes in their holes. Really looks like fun, and reminds me of the days hunting this same area. Never had a dog, but I have hunted with a friends in New Mexico. A good dog is much more fun than just chasing the birds. Love the gun and the dogs.

I suppose we saw twenty five coveys, all bobwhites except for the one covey of blues.

Good luck this weekend!
