Should be about the last few days of the season in MS for the big ducks at Beaver Dam. Any one there now? Any one going before its over for this year? Been twice; need to go again before I die. One of the Baptismal Fonts of waterfowling! Kevin

Both of my trips were in late January; first one cold c. 30 -40 degrees but crystal clear with moderate wind. Second trip was much colder, c. 20s daytime with teens at night and ice capades before dawn setting and rearranging decoys. Very windy that first day with great broken cloud cover. Amazing how ducks would "fall out" from high altitudes and sift down through the flooded timber, you had only seconds to react. Second day we lost the wind and mostly clear sunny skies but still cold. Consequently less action. For me, mostly used to wide, open-water shooting in the coastal mid-Atlantic flyways, flooded timber hunting was a "strange brew." Really unique, everyone should try it at least once in your waterfowling career. Kevin

It's been years since I've been there, but sure would like to go again. Back in December of '09 five of us Foxers met up at Tunica and had a couple hunts with Mike. We had four Super Foxes in the blind at one time. Wonder if that has ever been done there before, or since.

Kevin, I'm thinking about putting together a hunt there next season. Did you use Beaver Dam Hunting Services or another outfitter? Thanks!

Spyder, we used BDHS and shot with MIke Boyd and son Lamar along with an apprentice guide the first trip, then with Mike and Lamar for the second trip. They are great people and really "lean into it." They have added a second house to act as another resident lodge; very modern and comfortable and literally within walking distance of the boat dock taking you out to the blinds.

You can rent that house or stay up in Tunica in any one of what Frank Zappa's album "200 Motels" immortalized. The motels are cheaper to attract the gambling crowd but are invariably clean and safe, but the Boyd's newer lodge is very nice and you have the place to yourself to come and go as you please for not that much more money per night, especially if you put your own group together, which I highly recommend.

While you are there, do not miss the old Beaver Dam Club house, the tiny but fascinating Tunica Museum, and of course the old Blue and White restaurant, where Nash and his cronies met for breakfast many mornings. Kevin

I’ve had some great hunts in the Tunica area. There was no shortage of spoonbills, though. One time, we were in a blind by a levee, we killed a group of spoonies. Our guide’s yellow lab swam out to retrieve one, hauled it up to the levee, dropped it on the ground, hiked its leg and peed on it, and just left it there and swam back to blind.

I guess he didn’t think much of the Great Northern Shoveler.
