Grip cap and Butt Plate for C grade Philadelphia Arms Gun

Postby David Penland » Thu Jun 25, 2020 2:04 pm

Does any one know what type of grip cap and butt plate may have come on a C grade Philadelphia Arms 12 gauge? I am in the process of bringing one back to life and any information would be appreciated. Thanks

From my observations Philadelphia Arms Co. used a plain generic butt plate with horizontal grooves between the screw holes --

and a grip cap with horizontal grooves across the face of it.

To identify totally original buttplates of this style, you need to count the serrations and measure the screw separation. They're not all the same.

Eightbore may be the only person that knows that number of serrations. The picture I used is actually of a Tobin as my only picture of a PAC butt plate isn't very good. My C-Grade pigeon gun has a straight grip and a Silvers recoil pad.

Found a couple of pictures of the grip caps.

Also, the article on C. William Hayward's E-Grade Philadelphia Arms Co. gun in The Double Gun Journal Volume Two, Issue 1, shows a very ornate, thick, butt plate, made to add about a 1/4 inch or so to a stock. I've seen that butt plate used on L.C. Smiths and other American doubles

Dave Penland,

Very similar to what Dave Noreen/Researcher has shown above, here's the butt plate and grip cap from my Early A12 SN 7983. Maybe same style as used on the Philadelphia Arms Fox?
