What is the correct metal finish on a Philadelphia Sterlingworth forend iron. Thanks.

It is a time period thing. Sometimes color case hardened, sometimes niter blued.

It is a derelict gun I am restoring so I suspect it’s an earlier model. What would you say for an earlier gun? I suspect I’ll look it up to make sure. Thanks.

From my observations up to at least 1922 the Sterlingworth forearm irons were niter blued. By 1928 the forearm irons were color case hardened. Perhaps someone can narrow the change down. I suspect it may have happened when they moved to the new factory in the 4700 block of North 18th Street, and dropped the price of the Sterlingworth from $48 to $36.50.
