FOX UPLAND GUN CHAMPIONSHIP at the VGC

Post by Silvers »

Daryl and I volunteered to work with the Vintage Gunners Admin to develop a "Concurrent" for Fox small bores and lightweight Fox 12-gauge guns, in conjunction with the upcoming Vintage Gunners Cup - September 19-21 at Hausmann's Hidden Hollow Sporting Clays in northeast PA. The following rules were developed and are now approved. Thanks to the Fox BD's for authorizing the purses. There is no entry fee for AHFCA members (beyond the VGC fee for their "Field Gun 5 stand" event). We hope to see many production and custom Foxes strutting their stuff while doing a warm up for the fall bird seasons!

Daryl and Frank

REVISED ON SEPTEMBER 18 DUE TO CHANGES MADE BY THE VGC OFFICIALS

“Fox Upland Gun Championship” – a concurrent event
to be held at the 2019 Vintage Gunners Cup (VGC)

Thursday and Friday – 19 and 20 September

1. The Fox Upland Gun Championship is open to all AHFCA members in good standing. Fox Board members may also compete because scoring will be done by the VGC range officer(s). There is no extra charge beyond your entry fee for the Vintage Gunner’s “Field Gun 5-stand” event. Anyone wanting to join the AHFCA may do so at the Fox tables before shooting.

2. This competition will recognize shooting excellence with lightweight Fox shotguns that are configured for upland game hunting. Guns must weigh no more than 6 pounds & 13 ounces - to be verified by the VGC range officer.

3. The shooting menu consists of ten (10) “true pairs” (simo pairs) for a total of 20 birds at Hidden Hollow’s 5-stand. All VGC rules and procedures will apply.

4. A.H. Fox design shotguns only - to include Philadelphia, Utica and those made in New Britain with the traditional Fox cocking slide that acts on the toes of the hammers. The current “A Grade” Fox gun by Savage/Stevens and the Fox “Model B” and its clones, while fine shotguns, are not eligible for his concurrent event.

5. AHFCA members who are interested in competing will buy a Field Gun 5-Stand score card at the Vintage Gunner's check-in table before shooting their first round with a Fox gun. Be sure to tell the check-in clerk you want the special Fox card. Member then gives the score card to the range officer at the 5-stand and shoots his/her round of (10) true pairs. Members will be on their honor to shoot for the Fox Upland Gun Championship score only once and before shooting any additional rounds with a Fox shotgun for the VGC Field Gun event.

6. Fox BD members will get the scores from the VG check-in clerk after the cards are returned to the office and will tally/post them at the Fox tables.

7. CASH PURSES: $75-$50-$30-$25 and $20 respectively to the top-five finishers.

8. The AHFCA Board of Directors reserves the right to change these rules based on field conditions or unexpected events on the days of the event. Any such changes will be posted at the Fox display tables.

This event sounds like fun, and I'm hoping to participate. However, I'm one of those guys that has to repeat things, just to make sure that I understand correctly. If I misunderstand, just set me straight. When I arrive at Hausmann's, and stroll down to the 5 stand field, my first round needs to be with a light weight Fox. Is that correct? That's okay with me, I just want to understand the process so that I don't commit a Faux Pas. This will be my one and only opportunity to distinguish myself in the "Upland Gun Championship". I can shoot additional rounds at the 5-stand, but those results would only apply to the over all competition. Correct? Why am I asking? Because if I practiced with my light weight Charles Daly 12 gauge to learn the patterns, and then shot with my 20 ga. Fox, it might not be in the true spirit of the event. I simply want to have fun (and get laughed at) and not break the rules. Jeff

You are welcome to borrow mine if you like. I'll have a 20 and a 16. Take your pick.

Jeff, you can shoot as many rounds as you'd like with a lightweight SxS Parker, Daly, Crescent, Ithaca or any other maker (that meets the VGC weight criteria of 6-13 max) toward the Vintage Gunners 5-stand Event score, before or after shooting your lightweight Fox. Your very first round with a lightweight Fox (whenever you chose to shoot it) will be scored for our Upland Gun Championship on a special-colored card that you'll have to get beforehand at the Fox tables. That's it!
