Lubaloy Super-Trap Shells

Post by Researcher »

There were two boxes of Western Cartridge Co. Lubaloy Super-Trap Loads in the Ward's Auction ended last evening. The two-piece box --

went for less than the later one-piece box --

Just the things to go with ones Fox SBT.

I guess this shell is all I'm ever going to own --

Dave, do you have a picture of a box from those eras that are decribed on the box as a "pigeon load" or "flyer load"?

It seems that Western Cartridge Co. considered their lighter powder charge 1 1/4 ounce Lubaloy load in the 2 3/4 inch 12-gauge RECORD case the Super-Trap load --

I've never seen a box of these though they were in the Western Cartridge Co. catalogs and price lists from 1929 to 1949.

I saw those too, Dave. New to me.

What would that velocity have been? I've never seen a 3 1/8 - 1 1/4 loading listed on a DE chart.

3 1/4 - 1 1/4 is 1220 fps. Would you think it would be about 1170 ?

The powder choice is interesting too, for a 1 1/4 oz. load.

In 12-gauge, 3-1/8 DE x 1-1/4 ounce = 1190 velocity

JFI ….. 3 DE x 1-1/4 ounce = 1165

I sure would like to see Ward's offer a box of Western 1 3/8 ounces of Lubaloy #4 for us to enjoy, and maybe bid on. So far, no dice.

Thanks Dave.

Still looking for that one, the earliest Record 2-piece (If it exists), and the Foil and Plain Mark V.
