Model 1911 pin gun original finish

Post by Deadeye7 »

I have a rather nice Model 1911 pin gun. Most all external finish is gone from action, but was surprised to see the forearm iron blued on the inside. I expected it to be case colored. What was the original finish for action/forearm?

From the Sterlingworth "pin gun" era to the early 1920s forearm irons were mostly blued. Probably nitre blued. The receivers were bone charcoal color case hardened. Right after WW-I A.H. Fox Gun Co. went to cyanide case colors.

Thanks, it looks like nitre blue. I may have to fire up my tank.
