A nice balmy 27 degrees this morning and nine of us did the main course at Rock Mountain Sporting Clays.

This was my first time shooting a Remington 11 and a couple of my buds just about flipped out when it came out of the case. Nevertheless it did very well mix/match along with a Winchester Model 12 Trap gun that's my current pet for sporting clays shooting. Yup, two very different shotguns. The Remmy barrel codes "PTT" date it to June 1948, one of the last ones made.

Today was an overcast day, snow on the ground and with little color contrast. Cell pics aren't the best but here are the 11 and 12. Click twice to expand.

I don't have a Model 11, but I have a full bag of "The Sportsman" the three-shot version that Remington introduced in 1930 along with the 20-gauge Model 11. I bought these guns back before the economy tanked in 2008, and have pocket change over $600 in the set. A lot of fun for not much money.
Top -- February 1941 vintage 12-gauge 30-inch Full with solid rib
Middle -- April 1938 vintage 16-gauge 26-inch Improved Cylinder with solid rib
Bottom -- January 1948 vintage 20-gauge 28-inch Modified plain barrel

I then paid half as much as I paid for all three guns for a righteous 26-inch ventilated rib SKEET barrel for the 20-gauge. Gotta luv the work the boys & girls at Ilion put in milling the ribs integral with the barrel on these old Remington pumps and autos. This year I picked up a nicer 12-gauge "Sportsman" of June 1936 vintage with a 30-inch solid rib Improved Modified barrel.

Nice collection Dave. Thanks for posting. Yes it was a lot of fun to shoot the Model 11 once I got used to its double shuffle recoil. I had it set for heavy loads and was shooting Rio 1-ouncers at 1210 speed; feeding and ejection were fine but the action timing was exaggerated slow. I thought about changing to the light load setting but my fingers weren't working too well in the cold. Maybe one of these cold days Frosty the Snowman will show up at mid course with a flask of hot chocolate for the diehard shooters .....

Remington Arms Co. was on a roll in 1906 and 07. Their professional shooter William Heer carried the high average for 1906 of 96.3% on 14,055 targets which they touted heavily in their early 1907 advertising --
Then on June 20, 1907, J.J. Blanks won the Grand American Handicap with his Remington Autoloading Shotgun using UMC shells loaded with Ballistite dense smokeless powder.
That was the world Ansley H. Fox was trying launch his new double into and also in 1907 the economy crashed.

Frosty was ready today with double espresso accompanied by lekvar donuts!!!

Somehow I doubt that bit on lekvar donuts, almost impossible to find nowadays.

So, am I getting the drift that we'll be seeing Frosty and Frosty Jr. braving the cold this winter at the Rock? A flask of hot chocolate or similar would sure be appreciated on cold days, let us say at station 8 or 9. Frosty's new Yamaha sleigh should make short work of running the hot stuff out on the course.

I really like model 11s. I currently own grades A-E (5 of the 6 grades offered). A, B and C are very nice original examples. With the D and E needing restoration. I am looking for an F.

If your into restoration candidates there is a straight grip F on Ward's current auction, that may be of some interest.

Warning it does have a cutt's and non-original forearm.

I just saw this post. I checked it out and saw the auction was over already. $1,000 it went for. Not bad considering what it was.

The 11F at Ward's with a bit more condition went for more than $9000.
