Can someone please tell me what the bbl weight means? I am looking at a Fox SW with a #3 bbl weight. I would like to know what the bbl weight range is and what I should be looking for.
Thank you.

I call #1 "heavyweight", #2 "medium heavy", #3 medium light and #4 lightweight . Someone will be along shortly with the tabulated weights for the various lengths in the various gauges and then a discussion will ensue about whether the weights are for finished barrels or barrels in the rough.
I find the qualitative descriptions sufficient. No doubt the weights were useful to the Fox employees, but as a shooter/owner I can't think of a practical use for the information. Only about 1/3 of the Foxes I've owned were stamped.

Mike,
Thank you. That was a big help. I remember now from a chapter in McIntosh's "A.H. Fox."
