Was it common for an alpha to follow the numeric serial number at one time? Example: 12345A

I assume the alpha would denote the grade?

Thanks -

I should've been more specific. If I understood correctly, the impression I got was that the alpha was included in the serial# on the lower tang.

I told him to look at the tang, but perhaps he was looking at the receiver and/or the barrel flats.

I recently purchased a nice Philadelphia AH Fox Sterlingworth. Ser #916xx. Sent a request to Savage Arms this morning for information. Does anyone have an idea as to date of manufacture?

Thanks, Arctic Fox

You probably won't get a lot of information on a Sterlingworth but they should give you a shipping date.

I've never seen a grade letter with the serial number on the exterior of the trigger guard back strap. In the early Wayne & Bristol Street years the grade letter was stamped pretty close to the serial number on the watertable.

After the move to North 18th Street & Windrim Avenue the grade letter moved a bit farther away from the serial number on the watertable.

By the Savage years they weren't sure where to stamp the grade --

Did you receive your Savage Arms letter yet? Just curious how close manufacture date was to 1920-1921?
