Someone said 27,800 was the first. I'm not sure what McIntosh said. I assume you have a letter on your gun. Where was your gun originally sold to?

It is hard to understand the Fox numbering system. I have two Super Foxes, an H shipped Aug. 14, 1923 with S/N 29016 and two weeks later they shipped S/N 27803 an HE--the third Super??--on Aug. 31, 1923. At what point did they assign the S/N? How long had S/N 27803 been in stock? These questions should have been asked in the 1940's or 50's when there were still early Fox alive and well.

The last line should read: "Fox employees alive and well." Sorry

There were likely not many HE-Grade Super-Fox guns made. Whether the number is 300 as McIntosh implied, or 200 or 400, we'll not really know until someone with the time and inclination gets access to the records and can go through them and tabulate these things. If 27800 was the first 12-gauge Super-Fox, there were less then 7500 graded 12-gauge Ansley H. Fox doubles produced from then to the end. What percentage of that less then 7500, were Super-Fox?? If we just take the percentages from the 16- and 20-gauge guns that Roe did tabulate for McIntosh's book, That would make 5200 to 5800 of those last 7500 guns A-/AE-Grades, leaving 1700 to 2300 to be divied up between SP-/SPE-, CE-, XE-, DE-, FE-,Skeeter-, Trap-, SPR- and HE-Grades.

being that these were "special purpose" guns I don't think there is any way to figure a organized approach to date of shipment and sequence of serial number
I own #27854 shipped in Nov 8th 1928,and # 28095 shipped a day before yours Abner Aug. 13th 1923

Another 12 gauge HE grade for anyone interested:

I used to own 27855, a two barrel set with Fox Kautsky SST that was shipped Nov. 3rd, 1923.

I have another HE 12, SN 31561 but do not have a letter on that one.

And a 20 gauge HE, SN 202290 that was shipped March 9th, 1925. A 32" F&F weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces. It has 2 1/2" chambers. A delicate little thing.
