Savage Fox question

I put money down on a "savage fox" 20 gauge serial #367810 at a gun shop the other day. When I got home I checked the s/n and they don't show numbers that high for any 20 gauge guns.
The receiver says "Fox Sterlingworth" the barrels say Utica NY.
The receiver is also blued. The gun is selling for $395
What am I getting ?

I'd say you have a hybrid. 20 gauge barrels on a 16 gauge frame. Factory might have done it, but I'm guessing not. I'd say someone fit a set of 20 gauge barrels on a 16 gauge frame after the fact. That serial number range is certainly for a 16 gauge Fox.

Sent you a pm with my email address. Please send the pictures to me and I'll post them for you. Please provide close ups of the barrel flats as well as the frame and forearm metal so we can see the serial numbers clearly. All three should have matching serial numbers.

Here they are. I'd be shocked if this gun wasn't a 16 gauge.

Those barrels look unblemished compared to the rest of the gun, something is going on there. Just curious, did anybody try a 16 gauge shell in it?

That bluing on the barrels looks pretty shiny to me, like maybe they were hot blued. Has the big lettering on top of the barrels like Savage used early on. Notice how the barrels here appear a bit more matte --

A curiosity to me is that some of the numbers on the barrel flats (particularly the 1, 3 and 7) are in the earlier Fox font but the numbers on the frame bar and the f/e iron look like later Savage font. I'd say the barrels might have been numbered before the other components were done, and if so that's opposite of typical factory practice.

Also maybe it's just the picture but the wood inlet (next to last pic) looks way too big for the f/e iron.
