Barrel set value?

What is a set of graded barrels worth? (12 ga. 28" mod and full Philly) The blue on them is gone but they have no pits, dents or bulges. I have the forearm too, though the wood is rough. . I figure the lack of finish is unimportant since they would have to be refinished after fitting anyway.

What are they worth?

It's a tough question. The technology in place when Fox guns were built isn't what it is today with CNC machining and interchangeable parts. Swapping barrel sets is chancy. If your set works properly on the buyer's frame without any "fitting", they'll be worth some $. That happens occasionally but it isn't the norm. If slightly oversize and can be "fit" - they'll be worth less because of the expense of fitting. But if undersize they aren't worth much to that particular buyer because they won't work on his frame without significant effort and expense. If the barrels were being fitted to a high grade frame that had a blown or missing barrel set, doing the wedges and engraving to match, that might be justifiable. More minor issues are the serial number and grade stamp letter matching. Fitting requires great skill and isn't the thing most people can do at home. You might start out at several hundred dollars for the barrel set on contingency they'll work as is. Drop the price by ~ 50% if oversize. Full refund if they are undersize and won't work. Personally I wouldn't buy a barrel & forend iron unless I had a recovery arrangement. Been there before, lesson learned. Silvers

What I have recorded of ebay auctions. Sets of A-Grade 12-gauge barrels have gone for around $360. 12-gauge Sterlingworth barrels have gone for from $102 to $203.

Was that with or without the forend iron?

Thanks, Dick
