Update: Preparation for Next Fall

Last February I created a "post" talking about the fun of preparing for the next duck season. I dragged a lot of wood across a frozen lake and built the blind on the frozen "mat" so that I would be ready in the fall. In the picture I showed the framework resting on the ice, and I'm sure it looked a little"weak" to a few of you. So, as a member in good standing of the AHFCA I figured I should give you an update.

Here's how it looked last Saturday:

I also promised that I would show you pictures of mallards taken from that blind. Well, that hasn't happened yet. However, I did have some fun last Saturday. A wood duck dropped in about 25 feet from the end of my barrel. I didn't have the heart to blast him, so I stood up and flushed him, and naturally I missed. I then had a flock of 12 mallards circle the deeks twice, but then they headed to the other side of the lake. I guess I should have taken a poke at one, but I thought they were a little too far out. Finally, at 8:45 a.m. a nice flock of geese came flying right towards me. They were a little off to the side, but flying low, and slow. I lined up my left barrel (super tight) and took a shot. Naturally, it dropped into a sea of very tall cattails. After about 5 minutes of searching, I practically stepped on him. He took off running and after a pretty good sprint I caught up with him. After about 2 or 3 minutes of intense "hand to hand" combat I came out the victor. So, it is possible to knock down a goose with 1 oz. #5's, but they had better be low, and you better hit them good. I'll try it again this weekend, but I'm almost out of Bismuth and Able Ammo is out.

What a great blind and no sky busters set up behind you like many places.

That sure brings back memories. I can remember walking 400 yards through phragmite fields to the edge of the swamp rolling a wood pallet end over end to make the first trail of the year.

Sweaty work that only a 17 year old would do and call it a good time!
