A "vintage" hunt

Here are the results of an afternoon hunt on our ranch late last month. The gun is a 16 Ga Sterlingworth and the shells are vintage WWII. Both performed as manufactured. These birds, a Pintail and a pair of Widgeon, took 5 shells to score, but the misses were mine. :)

Calgunner,

That's a great picture. I'm just curious.....where did you come across the 1945 shells? Are they are paper hulls?

Sweet! I've got a couple boxes of those in my stash; they belonged to my dad, and I'd like to shoot 'em, but I doubt I ever will. And yep, mine are paper.

I got an uopened case of those shells a while back for $6 per box. I just wanted to give the old shells a try and they fired perfectly. They are 2 9/16", but the gun has 2 3/4" chambers and was manufactured in 1916.

Nice pic and gun. Did you change out the shot with bismuth or something else that is legal for waterfowl?

No, I just went with what was originally loaded, chilled #5s. Figgered that a few shots on my personal fields wouldn't hurt. We use lead on pheasants out there all the time.

Half the joy of shooting papers is the way they smell. I buy them every chance I get and I ain't afraid to use 'em. But not for waterfowl.

i dont mean to ruffle anyones feathers here but i wouldnt talk on an open forum about shooting anything but nontox at waterfowl. im not saying you did but your topic post sure sounds like it. it dosent matter whos fields or whos private property you shot them on unless they were domesticated and in a pen it is illegal to use anything but nontox for waterfowl regardless if it hurts anything.

I agree! Like the smell of a good cigar, a brandy, or the smell of a campfire. One just has to go with the other.

Sit downwind of me, pour me a cup of coffee, and I'll be gald to share your campfire :D

Nice to see the 16 getting the job done on waterfowl.

KADS, it sounds like you're enjoying your Foxes. Great!

I'm not too familiar with the tech specs for Kent TM's. Are you shooting factory ammo or reclaiming the shot and loading your own? Silvers

Mike, I had to give up the cigars. Now I don't have to sit downwind of the wife.
