Help me with rebates

Do rebates serve a purpose/function or is this cosmetic? My limited understanding is that rebates are the inletting of the metal on either side of the tang (top and bottom?) and the stock wood extends in to fill this space. If its purpose driven, then would it be for strengthening of the stock; perhaps to facilitate the mechanics of the action...sears, safety, or cocking?

Anyway, would someone comment/explain?

thanks,
RH

Rebates help prevent the head of stock from spreading if a crack happens under top tang. You will notice Foxes ,Parkers etc with a pin through the side panels of stocks to repair them after they crack.Sometimes panels are checkered to try to hide repair. Bobby
