While not a collector, I do have my Grandfathers AE grade Fox (Savage version). The gun is serial numbered in the 34,3xx range, and dates to late 1935. I have the Callahan letter on it. The gun is 30" bbls choked mod x mod.

The bbls are probably 95% or better, the case coloring is long gone-beautiful patina grey action now. The stock has seen better days- it has lots of character so to speak. Unfortunately the stock is pretty well oil saturated and it has loosened up around the tangs. The forearm is worn smooth, with only the slightest hint of the checkering that was there, and some heavy gouges. The original Jostems Anti-Flinch pad is still on the gun- although it is badly cracked and crushed from sitting in a gun cabinet for most of its life.

I believe the gun needs to be in the field, thats what it was made and purchased for. Hopefully, even though it is a bit tight in the chokes, I may even try a few rounds of skeet with it along with using it as my main pheasant gun. To that end I am sending the stock off for a professional repair and finish job (stockfixrs in Wyoming).

I am not completely sure of its history-other than it was purchased new by my grandfather and he apparently used it heavily. I know he later bought a model 21 Winchester, so i'd guess that is when the Fox was retired- I just don't know when that happened. My father sold the Model 21 sometime in the late 60's (curses!) after my grandfather died. My father remembers that my grandfather had trouble with the saftey on the Fox- but he can't remember what the issue was. He believes it was sent off for repair, but we have no further records of that.

Anyway- sorry for the long intro. I am glad to have found this forum.

Welcome aboard. It is good to see another from the Northern Rockies. What area in Montana? When I am in Idaho most of my time is at my place right outside west Yellowstone 3 miles from Montana.

Good for you, getting Granddads gun back in the field. They need to be used. Personally I would not worry about the Mdl 21. I have a couple and these days they are becoming safe queens while the Fox's go hunting.

I'm in Missoula. My time around Yelowstone is somewhat limited- Although for the last few years I've met up with some folks to do some fishing for a week or so- usually base camping around Quake lake but fishing anywhere from Slough Creek to the Ruby. I love that country around there.

Lot of good fishing around there. In my miss spent youth I did some guiding there and on the Henry's Fork.
