Book on shotshell boxes?

Can anyone recommend a book on shotshell box collecting? I'm thinking of something with lots of pictures that gives some dating and maybe some pricing information. Maybe too much to hope for, but I'm thinking along the lines of those paper bound collector's guides. Google searching has produced a website/on line-type resource, but that's really not my cup of tea. Suggestions appreciated; thanks...

Old thread I know. If you can find it, The Encyclopedia of Shotgun Shell Boxes is the Bible in this area. Out of print for many years.

That book would be a nice addition to any sporting book collection.

You can buy old Ward's catalogs but I don't know whether they come with price keys. They sell groups of them at every auction.

Many years of kicking around different collectible sporting items has taught me to throw the price guides away.

Buy what you like at whatever it costs, within reason of course, and let the next generation figure out what it's worth.

A friend of mine would say, "if I thought enough of it to buy it, why would I sell it?".

Sage wisdom.

Ward's price key is an actual list of prices of things that have sold. That is way different from a "price guide" which has nothing to do with the selling price of anything. Your friend's "sage wisdom" would put most of us in an old folks home.

Bill is exactly right in that Ward's gives you a free market indicator of what people of like interest are willing to pay for an item.

Unless you have the catalog you cannot match up pricing to an item and just as importantly condition! unless you do it in the month following the auction as their prices realized data only reference "Item Number" and "Sale Date".

You should be very aware that buyer's premium may be included in prices realized but their other fees are typically not and this can be from my experience up to $40 for a single box of shells, whether it is a $5 box or a $500 one.

Don't want you in a "Rest Home" yet Bill you have too much valuable information to share.

Let me know when you're ready to part with that 10-E, might help you keep sanity in these trying times!

Be well,

Will

Will, you and others have mentioned Ward's shipping costs. They are ridiculous. I have offered several options to auction houses, one option is to move in for a few days and help them pack their items. No one has taken me up on my offer.

A few years ago Ward's quoted me $200+ to ship some books to Canada. I told them to resell them.
