20 ga Utica
20 ga Utica
New Forum Member here. My Fox is a 20 ga. Utica A-grade from the very end of 1936. It's straight stocked with double triggers and extractors. The frame is stamped only with the serial number and "20 GA". The barrel flats have a single "A" under the left chamber, oval SP proof and serial number; there may be a "3" under the left barrel. The barrel tops are stamped "Chromox Fluid Compressed Steel" (right) and "Savage Arms Corp., Utica, N.Y., U.S.A." (left). Barrels are 28" Improved Cylinder(R)/Full(L) and I believe these are the original choke constrictions. The chambers seem to be 2-3/4" but there is no chamber length stamp.

Re: 20 ga Utica
Welcome to the Fox den. Congratulations on your A grade 20. Is this a new gun to you, or have you had it for some time? The chokes may well be original, but the best way to really know is to see the factory order card, or send for a letter of authenticity from John Callahan.
Are you an actual paid, new member? If not, membership here would allow you access to other forums on this site and also get you one free Fox factory card lookup per year. These original existing cards often show some very interesting specs on the gun in question. Membership is a whole lot better deal than the letter, though both are even better. Annual membership is $30, while a letter is $40, and an application for membership and all pertinent info can be found on the home page link (in red). The member's forum, which is inaccessible to non-members, is worth many times the membership cost itself.
Glad to have you here, SRH

Re: 20 ga Utica
Thanks Stan,
I am just a forum member so far but thinking of becoming a real member. I'd like to see the original spec card to confirm the bore/choke dimensions. I don't have a bore gauge but I do believe that the open barrel has a larger bore altogether than the choked barrel. It is visibly/measurably larger on its exterior and its interior measures .620 at the muzzle. I am only the second purchaser and fourth owner; the third is a friend and it has been in his family since its manufacture.
