On my BE 12 gauge the left ejector fires about half the time when the gun is opened without that barrel having been fired. Kinda aggravating when it kicks a good shell out on the ground. If the gun is opened slowly it may not fire, but almost always does when opened smartly.
Is it most likely that the ejector sear is not engaging quite enough?

Re: Ejector question
Stan, without looking at the assembled parts I'd say there are two likely causes: First one is, the tip of the ejector sear isn't fully engaged in its matching knotch in the ejector hammer. But a word of caution, the mating surfaces are tiny and any change by stoning etc will affect the geometry of the whole setup. The angles must be precisely maintained - as with a jig. And if the tip or knotch are worn it will probably happen again; the part(s) may be softer than they should be and hence they must be hardened. The second possibility is that some voodoo gunsmith has already "worked on" that ejector to re-time it and that's why it's misfiring. In that case any modified part(s) will probably have be replaced and fitted to work properly. That's why I try to pick up ejector parts wherever I can, and I did find some good ones while at the VC last week. Often though, the parts we see advertised aren't fully machined. They were probably in production at Savage when it shut down ..... ??????
You'll have to send the entire gun to someone familiar with Fox ejectors because it will have to be opened, closed and adjusted multiple times to get the ejector to fire exactly at the top of the opening motion. I don't have an FFL to accept guns or gun frames for repair; otherwise I'd do it for you as a favor. And since I do my my own ejector work and I don't know of anyone I could recommend. Maybe someone else has a PROVEN gunsmith to share? I say proven because I've seen more Fox ejectors goofed up by voodoo guys than anything else.

Re: Ejector question
Thanks, Frank. I had it at a well known double gunsmith recently to have some parts replaced on the right ejector, and get it working right. He did it perfectly, but after shooting it some the left is now acting up. I'll send it back to him after hunting season and let him straighten it out. It's proven itself on doves already this season, so I'm not in a hurry to send it away for several weeks.
I share your skepticism of letting anybody mess with Fox ejectors (and Hunter One Triggers, too), but have a lot of faith in this one. I'm not going to attempt it myself, either. I'll do a lot of work on them, but not this.
Thanks again, Stan

Re: Ejector question
I've installed over 50 Hunter One Triggers from scratch in double trigger guns. I've never seen one I couldn't make work flawlessly! I love the things! Jerry Andrews

Good to know, Jerry. If this one ever causes me problems I will be contacting you. 32" 16 Ga. Field Grade with HOT and ejectors. Helluva late season dove gun.
