Disassembly of 12 ga Fox Sterlingworth SN 1382XX

Post by gtibbitts »

New to the forum. I am a stock maker and have started to disassemble a Fox Sterlingworth 12 ga per the instructions found on this site (most helpful). Unfortunately I had started the disassembly prior to seeing the instructions on the forum and did not fire the triggers into a wood block. If I remove the sear in this condition am I going to have parts flying? Do I need spectial tools to reset the springs for the sears? How should I proceed? I would appreciate any help on the matter. Thanks in advance.

I've done that before. Myself, I'd put it back together and proceed from the beginning. It doesn't take that long.

Quick question on the Fox-Sterlingworth in the 1382xx serial number range. In my getting on near 25 years of recording Sterlingworth serial numbers, I've only recorded three in the 138xxx range, and one of those is a gun built on the flat-sided SP-frame like this 16-gauge --

So, does the gun you are working on have the regular Fox profile or is it an SP-frame gun? Either way, if you don't mind, could you give me the complete specs on the gun -- complete serial number, grip style capped or capless, barrel length, barrel steel Sterlingworth Fluid Steel or Special Alloy--Forged Steel, ejectors or extractors, and whether the top-lever, safety button and forearm wood are the Philadelphia style or the Savage-style. If you don't want to post that information here you can email AHFCA@comcast.net

Hold the stock in position by replacing the top tang screw and use your finger to push down each sear .I assume you have trigger plate off? Stock cannot be removed without removing sears unless the pyramid shaped piece between sears is broken or missing. Bobby
