Fox Collectors

Seeking some advice. I have a Sterlingworth with a splinter forend. Shooting a round of Skeet in the summer months the gun barrels get hot and become a little uncomfortable to handle. I would like to add a beavertail to give me a little more wood around the barrels. Would the beavertail have any adverse affects on the barrel lug or other parts of the gun?

If you use the existing fore end iron and the beavertail is properly fitted, it shouldn't be very noticeable. Personally, I use Gripswell shooting gloves and that takes the sting out of it without changing my guns.

All of my Sterlingworths have semibeavertails. They contribute to shooting well. There are no adverse effects. Over the years, I've seen some exotic solutions to a problem that doesn't seem to exist. Apparently, some are afraid the beavertail will somehow be pulled away from the iron so they add a third screw into the forend iron tip.

Over many tens of thousands of rounds through 3 SW's with semibeavertails I've seen no evidence that I should have used a third screw. On one occasion...just once.... I spun around to take a poke at a flushing grouse and literally pulled the forend off the gun. I got the bird.

Savage seemed to believe that the F.T. Russell forearm fastening on their Fox-Sterlingworths wasn't quite up to the task of holding a 12-gauge beavertail on their clay target guns, and most of the 12-gauge Fox-Sterlingworth Ejector Skeet & Upland Game Guns that came from the factory with beavertails had the Deeley lever latch. The only Fox-Sterlingworth I have with a beavertail is this 16-gauge Ejector Deluxe, and if you have your hand fully on the wood, you feel the forearm lift away from the barrels a bit in recoil.

Thank you for your comments. I think I will give it a try. I'll have the original splinter to put back just in case it doesn't work out.

don't tony galazan or someone make a leather wrap around for splinter forearms?

Thanks for the suggestions. I have used the leather covered hand guards in the past and have not been a big fan. Not being in high condition and already restocked, my Sterlingworth is just a shooter. I think having a new semi beavertail will make it more enjoyable for me. My original concern was to find out if the beavertail was actually going to create an issue with the barrel attachment.

The beavertail is completed and I took it for a test drive yesterday. I must say it does feel good. Here are the results for those interested
