Hole at under rib

Post by Dueeast »

whats the purpose of the little "vent hole" located on the underside of the barrel? It looks like it vents the under rib. Should this be oiled to prevent corrosion? :?

I have been told the holes were to drain the area between the ribs while rust bluing. Some guns from some periods do not have drain holes, later guns all seem to have the drain holes. I do not believe there is a reason to oil the hole.

It is my understanding the holes are to let the condensation out during the rib brazing. Some makers filled them in others left 'em alone.
