Super X Lubaloy shotgun shells

I followed up a lead on what I was hoping to be period correct (as in Nash B. period) Lubaloy shells but alas they were of a later vintage. But.... I bought 20 boxes anyway. 10 boxes of 6 shot and 5 each of 4 and 5 shot. I can't wait to smell the boquet of one of my all time favorite shells. These just bring back memories of early 70's wild pheasants!

Nice find. I have these waiting to be shot. Just can't seem to break them out for whatever reason.

I like the paper shells too. When I can buy them cheap I shoot them.
So anyway, my understanding is that Lubaloy is the trade name for copper plated shot from Winchester back in the day. I'd like to hear some first hand accounts from people that used them, especially older stories of how they worked on waterfowl before steel became the law ofthe land. The 6's and 5's are loaded to 1.25 ounces. The 4's are labeled magnums and are packed with 1.5 ounces. Those are some pretty stout loads. They should be great for turkey.

Lubaloy (Copperized) shot was a Western Cartridge Co. registered trademark. Lubaloy (Copperized) Shot was introduced in their progressive burning powder Super-X loads in the July 1, 1929,
Western Ammunition for Rifle, Revolver and Shotguns booklet. They had been providing it to Trap shooters in their Super-Trap loads a year or so before that, as it was used to win the 1928 Grand American Handicap. The Super-X loads with Lubaloy shot were originally put up in Western's high brass Record case --
while the regular chilled shot Super-X 2 7/8 inch 10 and 28-gauge, 2 3/4 inch 12- and 20-gauge and 2 9/16 inch 16-gauge loads were put up in their Field shell.
The Super-X 12-gauge 3-inch was put up in the Record case from its introduction --

Nice find. You are correct Lubaloy was the trade name used by Winchester Western for their true copper plated shot and was available in loaded shells and bulk shot in 5 pound and 25 pound bags for reloaders. I'm hording the last of a 25 pound bag of #6s I use for pheasant and long range prairie grouse. Unfortunately the Mark 5 plastic shells wont have the intoxicating aroma of a fired paper shell but your 5s and 6s will work wonderfully on pheasants.

Western Cartridge Co. was doing Lubaloy shot for at least three years before they ended up owning Winchester. Notice how the Western Super-X always just says something like "Super Excellant Long Range Load" or "Maximum Load" while the pretty much same load put out under the Winchester name has a Drams Equiv. --

Since you didn't get exactly what you were looking for, are you considering selling a few of the boxes? I have not seen plastic lubaloy before and would like to add a couple of boxes to my lubaloy collection.

Our late friend Austin said that when he was up to Julia's to check out BoWhoop for the article he did in our Newsletter, they went out back and shot some crows!!
Western Cartridge Co. was very proud of those Lubaloy Super-X loads. On July 1, 1929, a thousand regular 12-gauge 2 3/4 inch, 1 1/4 ounce, chilled shot Super-X loads had a list price of $56.50. A thousand 12-gauge, 2 3/4 inch, 1 1/4 ounce, Super-X Lubaloy loads had a list price of $76.50. Nash's favored 12-gauge, 3-inch, 1 3/8 ounce Lubaloy, Super-X loads had a list price of $90.50 per thousand.
On January 2, 1968, the shells ROMAC started this thread with, had a retail list price of $4.35 per box while the similar chilled shot Super-X load had a retail list price or $3.80 per box. Nash's 3-inch 1 3/8 ounce load was still offered at $4.90 per box, but I don't remember ever seeing anything but the 1 5/8 and 1 7/8 ounce 3-inch Magnum loads on the dealer's shelves in those days.
I left pretty wide spreads on two boxes, one Peters and one Remington as we were out Friday evening, and Saturday morning I had two you were outbid emails from Eric.

The price of shells have gone up. I attended the Pocatello gun show Saturday and there wasn't a fox (gun) in the building. There was one gray bearded gentleman (name withheld) selling regular 22 shells at three boxes of 50 for twenty five dollars. He was selling quite a few.
