Beaver Dam 2012

We spent a few days last week at Beaver Dam in Tunica County, MS hunting the "souf end trails" with the Boyd family. First timers, Parkerphile and case restorer par excellence, Kevin McCormack and my childhood buddy, Chris Nagel were cajoled into making the long ride with me. Despite temperatures in the high sixties we managed to eek out 48 birds in 3 mornings. One morning we had three Super Foxes in the blind and on another two #3 frame 3" Parkers. My standard frame 32" HE "Marse Henry" was working quite well for me the first day. I managed two (count 'em, two) doubles on gadwalls and mallards and took two singles, a jack and a gad drake on long high shots. As a bit of a Christmas surprise, I left my "Shootinest Gent'man" XE/HE in its McCormack restored E. K.Tryon LoM case down at the lake in the able care of Lamar Boyd. I could not think of a better place for it. So now he has one to join his Dad's Super Fox. It was a bit strange not having Russ Bickel next to me in the blind. It was just a year ago he and I made our annual pilgrimage to Nash's old spot. He lives on there however. Mike's HE was stocked by him as was Lamar's #3 frame 32" Parker. Russ also did the fine metal work and rust bluing on the HE/XE Special. Great craftsmanship never dies... Now I am working on getting these boys to Argentina to show them the kind of duck shooting Ho'ace and Capt. Harold had that cold morning on their lake in 1909...
