Iowa's pheasant opener was last Saturday. Took this nice 2 year old rooster on my farm with my new to me Sterlingworth. I was thrilled to take it with some hand loaded low pressure shells I had put together for just this occasion.

Nice!! Nothing like christening a new boom stick with a ring neck!

Pheasant age can be generally derived by looking at the length of the spurs. A nub is this year's bird, small spur is a year and a long spur is about 2 years. Anything over 2 years is a bonus for a pheasant so birds older than 2 are rare, particularly here in NW IA.

Thanks....never had heard that discussed before. Our wild pheasants are gone here in Central NY (Adirondack Foothills). Too bad.
