Fox Collectors

I am brand new here, and this is my first post. About 4 weeks ago I walked into a gunshop in Honesdale, PA, to have the proprietor help a friend of mine get the action unstuck on a mint 70's Rem. 1100 that was gunked up from not being used for that long (his uncle's). While the gunshop owner was fiddling with the Rem, I spied a double gun on the wall behind him. I asked him what it was and he replied that it was an AH Fox "A" grade. I asked to play with it, and it felt/balanced pretty nice. Had 30" barrels, and looked in super shape. I went home afterward and googled everything I could about Foxes. This led me to your site. I have been reading just about everything here. You guys are sick, lol. But you pushed me over the edge! I had to get it. So, now I am in possession of a beautiful AH Fox. Near as I can figure, on looking at the "Double Guns" site, from the serial No. 328XX, it is a very late (end of year?) 1927, "A" (non-ejector). The action is tight, and not marred at all. The wood is beautiful, with only a couple of scratches that can be easily fixed. The varnish finishing is a bit peeled. It is a pistol grip stock. The barrels are bored mod and full, and are in excellent shape w/no dents. The engraving is perfect, not nicked or scratched. The case color is pretty much faded,though. I put a Galazan slip on pad on it,and shot it this Sat. Using Win AA Handicap trap loads, it pulverized (literally) the clays. Felt a little stout in the recoil dept (these rounds don't feel that way with my light Browning Citori O/U w/26" barrels). Maybe the way it fits? Opening was a bit hard, and the primers deeply dented. The latch on the fore arm would open slightly. Don't know if this is a weak spring or too stout a load. I'm taking the Fox to Dan Rossiter this weekend to have him go over the gun, and see about the fitting, and make any recommendations about care and feeding (and any fixing that it may need). My plans for this gun, are to hunt pheasants and turkeys with it, and also shoot some clays.

So now, thanks to you all, I'm going to patiently be hunting for a 20 ga, straight gripped, 28" barreled companion for it. Thanks for reading this. Oh, Just sent my check off to the AHF Collectors Assn. BTW, this is a great forum. But, does this mean I'm getting the "Fox sickness," too?

You have the illness my friend, come meet us at the Hausmann Great Northeast side by side shoot next spring. The AHFCA will have a table and some nice stuff on display.

Welcome to our little "Asylum" Dalgo!! You will never forget your first Fox but will always yearn for the next one!!
JMHO but I would not stuff her with AA-handicaps....they are a very "hot" (high pressure) load, especially for an 85 year old Fox. Others will chime- in here I'm sure but find or load-up some nice low pressure 1 oz or 7/8 oz loads and you will enjoy shooting her for many more years to come.

How do really know that own a Fox? BTW, I purchased my first recently and I've not felt the same since ... Congrats, now post a picture please.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! Will post a pic (or pics) shortly when I sort pic posting out. Definitely an asylum! I'm enamoured w/mine now, but can see at least one other coming! Hausmann's in the Spring for sure. Too close not to participate (don't claim to be a good shot, though). I almost lost her, though. I went on a Saturday to pick her up, and was informed that the dealer took her to a gun show in Philly. Turned out that the show was mostly for black guns, and no one was interested. Guess I was meant to have her. She let me know that she was unhappy that I waited a week for her though. As I left the gun shop, I tripped on a step down, jammed her barrels (in a very soft case) into the sidewalk, and the buttplate jammed my ribs, causing me to do and end over end into the sidewalk. I cracked a rib, but didn't hurt her. She's just letting me know. However, even though I agree w/U toolman, on the high pressure loads, she came through and nearly every clay was pulverized. I think she let me know that she doesn't like high pressure loads. Fortunately, RST is not far away! Again, thanks for the warm welcome, guys.

Oh, Dan Rossiter told me to pick up some 7/8 oz. loads to pattern her with this weekend, but I could only find 1 oz. loads of 7 1/2's. I guess they will do for now.
