The Start of the fox collection

Post by ahornberger22 »

I'm fairly new to the world of side by sides and have done alot of research on the Foxes, LC's, and Parkers. As all of the 3 are nice guns, the Foxes interest me more than the other 2. Here is the start of my collection. The top gun is a Sterlingworth Pin gun 12ga with 30" barrels. I have the letter for it as well which says it shipped out of the factory on May 29, 1911. The bottom gun is an A grade 12ga made in 1929. I have a question for some of you wiser guys who have been around foxes longer than I have, the A grade has sling swivels on it. Could they be factory? They are very old and if they are not factory then whoever put them on did a very good job especially with the one on the barrels.

They may very well be factory....Fox outfitted a surprising number of their guns with "factory" sling swivels. You should check the original record on your guns serial number to find out.

I got a copy of the card for it, but do not have the letter. Would the letter be able to tell me anything more? Like where it was shipped or if they are original? Seems they're not on the card.

Your gun was made for stock. We believe guns that were taken out of stock and sold at a later date to fill an order could have been modified and the modification was not recorded on the factory card.. I do not believe a factory letter will shed any more light on the swivels, the factory letter may include the pellet count from the test shots and the ship date. Here is an example of a card that calls out swivels. Craig

Welcome to "The Asylum" AHB-22....nice looking guns.

I may be wrong but my eyes see "E.K. Tryon" as the ship-to, for your A-grade. If indeed the case, she didn't travel far, as Tryon was a very large sporting goods house right in the Philly vicinity. Many, many Fox guns were shipped there and I'm sure the sales dept. treated them as a Top-5, house account.

Good luck building your collection and always remember those prophetic lyrics from Bobby Lamb, off of "Chicago's" first album:

"...only the beginning.....only just the start...." Trust me, that will soon be your mantra........LOL!!! -----TOOL MAN
On the whole....I'd rather be in Philadelphia....
