Re: Bill G's Trap Gun Collection
That NID trap gun built on the magnum-frame is marked 5 on the watertable, barrel flat and on a note in an old notebook from the Ithaca factory.
It is mostly No. 5E but has an extra wedge of barrel engraving. Early NID No. 5Es had silver inlays --
but some time in the 1930s they changed over to gold.

Re: Bill G's Trap Gun Collection
Dave,
Thanks for setting me straight on that 5E, that is one rare bird since it is a Magnum 2 barrel set. I would like to hold that one and look at it closer for sure. Another Magnum action with barrels that are chambered for 2 3/4” shells, do you know if both barrels have 2 3/4” chambers?
What made me question if it was not a 7 was the barrel breach engraving and the duck inlay. The grade 5 normally had a pheasant on the left and a woodcock on the right.

Re: Bill G's Trap Gun Collection
Dave/Rresearcher;
Your foto of the barrels flats of 467661 shows a "4" on the left barrel flat for "FULL" choke. On the right flat it looks like an "8" but I never heard of Ithaca having an "8" choke designation.
So, is it really a "3" for Improved Modified. Or is it a "S"?
Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Bill

Re: Bill G's Trap Gun Collection
Also curious that its s/n 467661 is in the range for the regular frame NID, not the Magnum frame with serials starting at 500000.

Re: Bill G's Trap Gun Collection
Bill, as near as I can tell that must be a 3 for Improved Modified.
Stan, as far as the duck goes, here is a late No. 2E Magnum-10 that has a duck on the left side --
instead of the "normal" quail.
These high grade NIDs made after WW-II were likely all special made for special people, as all the post-war Ithaca paper states they are working as hard as they can on the overwhelming demand for Featherlights and that only a limited number of Knick SBTs and NID doubles in Field Grade and No. 2E would be available. Special people like Homer Clark Jr. --
Speaking of Ithaca, I lost out on a really cool Ithaca poster on ebay yesterday --

Re: Bill G's Trap Gun Collection
That is a neat poster there Dave,
I look over on Ebay occasionally, but not enough to catch these neat old advertising pieces.
You were the one who made me aware of magnum actions outside of the 500,000 serial # range, I have never encountered one yet, do you mind saying how many you have observed?
Thanks,
Stan Hoover
PS. Can you decipher the X175 on the rear of the lug??? Repair code??

I've only heard of two and only have pictures of this one. Have no idea what the X175 means.
