Back in the Fall of 1995 while at a local Gun show here in the Midwest an older gentleman approached my table and was admiring my collection of American doubles I had on display. He asked if I was interested in purchasing a couple of old SxS's that he had . I told him that I was very interested and asked what they were. He said that they were out in his car and he would bring them in and show me. Well a few minutes later he came in and handed me two cased guns. I opened the first case and pulled out an older AYA 12 gauge , Straight grip , a pretty nice shotgun. Then I opened the second gun case and pulled out a Beautiful A.H. Fox HE WOW ! I could'nt believe someone just brought this in to me..
He told told me that he was in his mid 80's and his Waterfowl hunting days were behind him ,and he thought someone else should enjoy his Old Fox Shotgun. He said it was a gift from father on his 16th birthday ! He told me of trips with his Dad to Savanah Illinois to hunt ducks on the Mississippi river . Said there was nothing like that Fox shotgun. He did'nt care much for the AYA but thought it could use a new home too.
Now would we be able to agree on a price ? Well He gave me a number and I told him that I would be happy to pay him that amount for the Fox. Then he said No thats for both of them ! I was nearly speechless. And Very Happy !
And He was correct that old girl was a great waterfowler..
Now comes the sad part of the story, A few years later I came on some hard times and had to sell off much of my collection of Doubles and Winchesters. That HE was one of them.. I had thought about that many times in the past and today while going through some of my paperwork, I came across the factory letter from Mr Callahan that I had sent for about the "HE" GRADE 12 gauge 30" full & full 14-1/8 LOP 2-5/8 DAH Straight Grip 9 lbs 1oz....... #29605.
Is Anyone out there the proud owner of this fine shotgun ?? If so I hope you enjoyed the history I shared.
Times are better for me now And if there is ever a time when she needs a new home I would welcome her back . ylwdog.
