I have a fellow proclaiming to hace a C grade, early 12 gauge gun n a Fox makers case, label and all, that was shipped with the gun. Fairly new to this, but have to admit that am fairly head over heels for the Fox guns, and have three in the rack now, since last September. No photos of the gun or case provided to me yet. Has anyone heard of, or know of any Fox makers cases?

Thanks

I have seen several high grade Fox gun sets in charming period cases....they look great. The cases that I have seen have not had "maker's labels" affixed inside. I have never uncovered any printed evidence of Fox offering/selling a hard case with their sets. That being said, there is absolutely NO reason why Fox wouldnt have supplied a perfect custom case with a gun when a customer requested and was willing to pay for one.

ps- if you get pix I would really like to see them.

No A.H. Fox Gun Co. catalogue in my collection shows any cases. So far, I can't recall having seen any production card that specifies a case be provided with a gun. I don't doubt that if a customer specified he wanted the high-grade Ansley H. Fox double he was ordering cased, that the A.H. Fox Gun Co. would get a case and put the gun in it. That seems to be the case with the Teddy Roosevelt, F-Grade, Ansley H. Fox. My gut feeling is that most Ansley H. Fox doubles that were cased, were cased by Abercrombie & Fitch Co., Von Lengerke & Detmold or Von Lengerke & Antoine.

There are certainly repro and/or made up A.H. Fox Gun Co. trade labels available from CSMC and others, but I can't recall having ever seen a bonified, Philadelphia era A.H. Fox Gun Co. case label. If someone has such, please post some pictures!!

The leg of mutton 2 barrel case that came with my Brush Ejector 2 barrel set had no maker's label but had a brass plate engraved with the name "W.P. FARTHING" and "XMAS 1926". The research letter shows that it was shipped from Fox's plant in Philadelphia on December 24, 1925 to Watkins Cottrell Company of Richmond, Virginia. There is no indication in the letter that a case was supplied by Fox with the gun.

Best Regards, George

The article by Tom Kidd in The Double Gun Journal, Volume Six, Issue 3, about XE-Grade, 16-gauge, two-barrel set, serial number 300459, shows what may be an original case and label, but it isn't mentioned in the surviving records. In the article, Tom speculates on this case and the case for the Teddy Roosevelt gun.
