Just bought my first Fox !

Just bought my first Fox shotgun an A grade 12 ga. with Krupp 30 inch barrels , half pistol grip stock in good condition. The serial number is in the 1100 range. Would any one be kind enough to give me a year of manufacture. Also, should these old beauties be fired only with low pressure shells. Any help you Fox collectors can give would be very appreciated.

I also have an early A 12 gauge with 1/2 pistol grip, 28" bbls choked IC and F. A dandy gun that was one of the first A. H. Fox doubles I've owned. Serial number 7983 that is 100% original with nice case, blue and wood finish. A real Fox Classic.
I've owned it for 39 years.
I used to hunt geese with it back when lead was OK and shot 2 3/4" magnums out of it. She took the abuse OK but I wouldn't do that now.
If the wood and metal are sound with no serious pitting in the barrels, light loads should be fine.
And I think your gun with serial number 1100 would be a year or two or three earlier than 1910.
Enjoy it. If you're like me, it will lead to many more Fox's.

I believe an Ansley H. Fox gun with a serial number in the 1100 range would be late 1905 or early 1906. What Patent dates are on the watertable? You can kind of time frame these early guns by which Patent dates are and are not on the watertable.

The only Pat Date is AJG. 1,905 on the watertable with other Pat. Pending.

I'm up in Kodiak right now, away from my research materials, but as I recall there was an October 1905 Patent and a January 1906, so it appears your gun was from before they were issued. Or, at least before the company got a roll stamp made with those dates. In late 1906 the A.H. Fox Gun Co. bought out the plant of Philadelphia Arms Co. and moved from their original factory at Wayne & Bristol Streets into that factory at North 18th Street and Windrim Ave. Guns made after that time also have the 1902 and 1904 patent dates originally assigned to Philadelphia Arms Co.
