If in doubt about the chamber length go ahead and buy a few boxes of RST 2 1/2 inch, 7/8th ounce cartridges. When still using fiber wadding it was not uncommon for gun manufacturers to cut the chambers slightly shorter than standard for a better gas seal so your 20 gauge SP could have 2 3/8th inch chambers and shooting 2 3/4 inch shells in a 2 3/8th inch chamber could be pushing chamber pressures up to the maximum. When feeding and caring for a relatively rare and possibly valuable gun both sentimentally and monetarily I would choose to error on the side of caution.kingoftheclinch wrote:i have a 20 ga sp fox think it was made in early 40's was wandering how important it is that you use 2 1/2 shells instead of 2 3/4 thanks
