I also have an SP 20 but mine is 2 3/4" chambered. Sure yours is 2 1/2"? Any photos of the gun?

the barrels arn't marked in any way with the size of the chambers. from what i have gathered on this forum a lot of folks use 2 1/2" shells for less pressure. i just dont want to destroy my greatgrandfathers shotgun!

Would you mind sending me the serial number of your gun and the specifications so I can add it to my log of found SP grade guns.

Thanks,

Tom

If in doubt about the chamber length go ahead and buy a few boxes of RST 2 1/2 inch, 7/8th ounce cartridges. When still using fiber wadding it was not uncommon for gun manufacturers to cut the chambers slightly shorter than standard for a better gas seal so your 20 gauge SP could have 2 3/8th inch chambers and shooting 2 3/4 inch shells in a 2 3/8th inch chamber could be pushing chamber pressures up to the maximum. When feeding and caring for a relatively rare and possibly valuable gun both sentimentally and monetarily I would choose to error on the side of caution.
