I love the look of ivory beads on a vintage shotgun. How are the Savage-era Sterlingworth front beads installed (press fit or threaded, thread size, etc.)? I'm thinking of installing one or two. Thanks...

OK; I know I'm not necessarily in the "clique", but come on: this info doesn't seem that esoteric, and I imagine somebody out there has it; how 'bout a little help?

Ok, let's see...... last I understood we have about 250 members, and I see we have 1084 registered forum users as of this morning. But only two replies over two days? Seems like many of the posters want technical information, but very few here are able/willing to help out.

Myself? I just don't have the time to answer many technical questions. And as I've written before, I will allocate my efforts mainly to actual members of the Association who can post their questions on the Members Forum. And even there, I must give priority to those who have been supportive of me when I've posted in the past.

I'll try to help out here. The metal front sight on Philly made guns is a taper-fit, no threads. And I presume Savage used the same convention for most if not all their guns. The taper shank on the metal front sight seems to be a proprietary Fox size and it's not compatible with Lyman nor Marbles tapers as used on their front ivory beads (Fox sizing is much smaller). Also, the Fox taper is larger than the taper shanks used for mid beads. Fin, at this point you can drill and ream for the regular ivory type front sight - Brownells has the reamers and you can find NOS Lyman ivories here and there. That would be better IMO than trying to file down an oversize ivory bead shank to a miniscule diameter, and gluing it in place. Such a bead would be easily sheared off. Least desirable IMO is to drill and tap the rib for the slightly undersize #6-48 mammoth ivories that Brownells sells. Silvers
