Question on snap on type forearm on graded guns

Post by vaturkey »

Just wondered if or how one could modify a graded barrel to accept a Sterlingworth type snap on forearm? Think I read somewhere (probably Michael's M. book) that some heavy duty target shooters specifically ordered snap on type forearms on their graded Foxes instead of using the standard latch type because is held up better when shooting lots of targets. Just wondering how one could do that after the fact (these days) as it appears it wouldn't be an easy thing to accomplish. PS. Thanks

You need to change the forend lug on barrels to sterlingworth type and of course have the snap on type forend. There are a number of double gunsmiths that can do the job for you.You can even change a graded latch type forend to sterlingworth snap on.I am refering to ejector forend but extractor could be modified also.As you know some of the early graded smallbores came with snap on forends.I really like them better than latch plate type.Look at Researcher's article on sterlingworths in past issue of double gun journal and you can see picture if you look closely at one of the forends having a sterlingworth type front piece added to graded type. I'm guessing forend lugs could only be found off of scrapped barrels. That might be a bridge too far I'm guessing.

I have an early A grade that was modified for a snap on forearm... I will see if I can dig up some pictures... it was done afeter market and I don't think anything was done that could not be done with a dremel/file. Works well and thought the gun is not worth much, I shoot it well and hunt with it more often than any of my other fox guns.

Cheers
