I was looking at my letter on my Super Fox this weekend and it said 'all stock guns were bored full choke". Does anyone have a Super bored anything else? Donnie

Donnie, while getting card copies for AHFCA members I've come across many Supers that were ordered Mod/Full and I-Mod/Full. Others were ordered to produce specific pattern percentages, for example: 85/85%. Silvers

F/F is the most common by far, but some C/F, IC/F M/F and IM/F.
My 31514 is IM/F is 3" marked

I understand the wording, "stock gun", to mean any gun that was not special ordered, or for this discussion, ordered with other than standard choking. This would mean that F and F was the standard choking for the Super Fox, according to the letter. McIntosh gives the numbers of .740" as the standard Super Fox bore and .048" as the standard Super Fox choke. This would agree with the letter you mention, as .048" was considered full choke with the ammunition of the day, even more so with modern ammunition. Other choking could be ordered, as could many other options available on other Foxes. As Frank said, they could also be ordered specifying a certain shot percentage to be delivered by each barrel, and with a specific load.

Stan: The first group of SF's were bored .750, the second group was bored .745 and finally the largest group was bored .738-.739. Full chokes run from about .042 up to .055 as measured from many samples. I agree F/F was standard.

Don't know if anyone is interested, but Cabelas at Hoffman has a Super Fox. It's not on the web site but I'm sure they would send pics. I didn't look at it real close. I think it had about a $3800 tag on it.

Yes, I knew that they were bored all over that range. While MMs Fox book is the most valuable tome we have on the subject, he makes that generalization in it that has been found to be inaccurate. Blanket statements like that will come back to haunt you every time. It could be said, accurately I think, that .750" was "standard" for a time, then .745" was "standard", then finally a "standard" bore that ran, as you stated, around .738"-.739".

My personal SF, 31794, is bored on the "tight" side, at .738". Chokes are .047"R and .049"L.

Do you know of more than one Super choked C/F ? I can't imagine many people wanting a big gun designed strictly to throw big loads of shot wanting it choked with a cylinder barrel. I'll probably start a dispute with someone who likes cylinder over dekes, but I'd never have ordered a 3" chambered gun choked that way. I occasionally use a cylinder in a duck gun for woodies coming into beaver ponds, but don't have the need for 3" shells there.

A minor point, but personally I would put the bore diameter range on that last and perhaps largest batch of Supers at .737 to .739". I''ve measured quite a few that came out at .737" plus/minus a tenth or so.

Also, I seem to remember reading that SW Wildfowl guns built on HE size frames and with 0-weight barrels, had standard bores of nominal .729" diameter, but I've never measured one. Perhaps Researcher Dave could comment on that? Silvers

The bores of my 1928-vintage Super-Fox are .738" and except for .003" and ,005" more choke are like Chas. Askins describes on page 82 in his 1929 book, Modern Shotguns & Loads. It seems like the earliest Super-Fox guns had bores in the .748" range but pretty soon they settled into .738". The extra set of 28-inch Savage-era barrels for my Super-Fox and my Sterlingworth Wildfowl both have .728" bores.
