Fox Collectors

I recently bin on and won a set of unfinished set of Fox Sterlingworth barrels on gunbroker.

Im looking for suggestions on where I could find the remaining parts (ie the top rib and extractors) to complete them as an extra set, I also need to find someone to assemble them and to checker and finish a new stock and forearm I had cut for it.

I am not a professional, but here is a Sterlingworth I made the stock and forend for and checkered myself.

Looks good. Just curious, but what method did you use to drill the tang holes?

After a lot of measuring and a lot of set up time, I used a drill press. Several times when have missed it a little, I do a little bit over size and then Brownel's Accuglas gel to refill the hole, around the tang screw ( using mold release) and then after curing about 4 hours,I remove screw. Then after 12 hours or so I go back and open up the epoxied hole to the correct diameter. This also gives you a lot stornger hole and on ethat is impervious to oils and water.
I am doing a 1936 NID Ithaca right now that just about drove me crazy.

The barrels you won should have the top rib soldered on but it will need matting or you can leave rib plain like lots of English guns.As to extractor if they are not present that will be a tough part to find.I have 12 gauge extractors and a few 12 right side split ejectors.Great job on the restock of your sterlingworth pictured.You are very talented. Accuglass the tang hole.... Interesting. I never thought of doing it that way, but I can see your point. Your work looks nice!

a rib can be procured from Galazan and probably other sellers... a company (name escapes me at the moment) in the NE own the original mating machine if you are interested in making it look original... someone here ought to know the name or a little searching on the site will turn it up.

NCA, I see you already have $270. in the barrels. You might be better off cost-wise to find a gun with a blown or bad set of 28" barrels and scavenging the top rib with the matting intact. The rib may be too wide but that can be remedied by reprofiling to match your barrel contours. Finding a 16 gauge extractor is going to be tough unless you can find a bad 16 gauge Fox gun or barrel set.

The soldering work will likely damage the bluing, and you're probably looking at another $150. or so to get that done. Maybe you can do the rust bluing yourself....? Lastly, the possibility of the barrels locating "as is" at all the fitting points is almost nil. Thus, besides the cost of completing the barrels, you'll have to get them fitted to your frame and typically that's another $200. or so.

All told IMO you're looking at some significant bucks to go farther on this project. Just something to consider. Silvers

Thanks for the for cost effective advise but something about an unfinished set of fox barrels bothers me when by all rights, they should be taking birds. I don't mind dumping in some $$ as long as a "project" has a feasible means of completion and doesn't turn into a "unicorn". I'll keep an eye out for a beat up fox I can salvage parts from.

If extractors are so hard to find, wouldn't one from Galazan's shop fit the bill?

Chris, I believe CSMC/Galazan has a policy whereby they don't sell smallbore Fox parts. Besides, from what I understand you need an extractor, not a split set of ejectors which is what CSMC supplies on their Fox remakes. Silvers
