This ad caught my eye because it used a full length pic of a straightgrip. On closer inspection, I'm intrigued by the butt treatment...anyone care to comment on what that is?

Mike, it's hard to tell from the pic/illustration but it might be an artist's rendition of a Jostam "Sponge Rubber Gun Recoil Pad". Type where the base is nailed to the butt with tiny tacks, pad is glued to the base and then dressed down. Jostam made at least two different versions of these pads, and this one might be intended to illustrate the so called single-ply one. Those Jostam sponge pads are very cool looking IMO. Silvers

It looks to me like a gun with a pad and a spacer. Unusual on a catalog gun, but I don't know of a commercially made pad that has that thick black area under the rubber.

Looks like a 1" black base with a 1/2" red surface...kinda thick. I just bought the ad, I'll post a hi-res pic when I get it.

I agree with Silvers. The illustration does appear to be a Jostam single ply sponge rubber pad.
Bottom pad from left is a new old stock Jostam Single Ply Sponge Rubber, to the right is a Jostam No Kick Coming recoil pad and top is a Jostam Anti Flinch mounted on my 16 gauge AE.
