Fox Collectors

Fox CE- 12 bore SN 2791-Earlier CE

Trying to pin down the date of manufacture at Philadelphia. Krupp steel barrels-30 inch.
My calculated guess is 1907-1912.

Any help would be appreciated.

You can sort of nail it down by looking at the Patent date stampings on the watertable. The very earliest Ansly H. Fox doubles have just --

PAT'D AUG.1,1905
OTHER PATENTS PENDING

That is actually the date for Patent No. 796,119 which covered the bolting for the Philadelphia Arms Co. Fox double. However, Ansley had left PACo. and founded the A.H. Fox Gun Co. by the time 796,119 was issued, and it was assigned to the A.H. Fox Gun Co.

A gun that I judge to be from 1906, serial 1733, carries the following --

PAT'D AUG.1 1905
OCT.17 1905- JAN.16 1906

Oct. 17, 1905 is for Patent No. 801,862 which covers the lock mechanism of the Ansley H. Fox double, and Jan. 16, 1906 is for Patent No. 810,046 that covers the rotary bolting of the Ansley H. Fox double.

In the October - November time frame of 1906, the A.H. Fox Gun Co. bought out the Philadelphia Arms Co. and moved into their factory building at North 18th Street and Windrim Avenue. With that they acquired Patents from 1902 and 1904 that were originally assigned to PACo. and began stamping those dates on the watertables of Ansley H. Fox doubles as well --

AUG.16 1904 AUG.1 1905
OCT 17 1905 JAN 16 1906

This early CE I have pinned down to roughly 1907,. It has fine scroll-engraving of the period
and rust bluing is excellent.

The first Fox I owned was a 1916 BE grade with 32 in FF barrels. I still have that B-grade and its
adventures over turkey and successful New Mexico goose hunts -dove hunts turned me into a AH Fox aficionado par excellence. That and a Super Fox with a long lost 1916 XE. These little Fox shotguns grow on you in direct proportion to experiences shared-like a loyal gun dog.

I have a well used but solid A grade serial #2496 that has the same patent info as Daves, it would be interesting to see when the first 1902 patents show up.

I have a straight grip "A" grade, serial # 2720, that also has the same patent stampings as yours and Dave's.
