well, I'll give you my opinion (not that its worth much).... not sure when Savage started using the cyanide method of case coloring but yours is pretty late and most the guns with non capped pistol grips have the cyanide colors... your gun does not look like the cyanide colors to me. Under the sterlingworth pictures on the home page there are several good pictures of that style case coloring.




The scratches under the case color look like some one used steel wool to scrub off the old case color.

The last concern, I would have prior to bidding on a gun like this is that your first pic appears that at the head of the stock the metal appears to be proud to the wood....

all that said... I'm no pro, have not been at this as long as many of the ppl here, and its always hard to decide on guns based on pictures.

thanks for input...as for scratches on receiver flat, i currently have two other savage sterlingworth's in inventory. a 16 ga and a 12 ga. interestingly, all three guns have scratches that look more like tool marks. this appears to be a characteristic of savage made guns? as for wood to metal fit, it is no better or worse than other savage guns that i have seen with supposedly original wood finish. i have also received input from gunbroker members. they can't say for sure either way. some do agree that if this gun does have original case colors, then it is really quite rare, as exposure to sun light does fade the colors quickly.
