need advice

Post by Gondo »

A few years ago my Dad gave me a Fox shotgun he had bought from a woman who was selling her late husbands guns. Per a J.T. Callahan letter it was completed in 1926 , serial # 30956 , grade A ,12 gauge, 28" barrels, choked full and full , straight grip. I'm not well versed in rating a guns condition, but except for missing the rear sight , this gun is in brand new condition. Original blueing, no rust, stock is perfect, the shotgun is immaculate. I have a few questions. I'm not a hunter, but I trap shoot occasionally. Can I use this gun for trap (I know over and unders are preferred)? Can I use modern ammunition? Would it be 'wrong' to shoot this gun if it has collectable value(considering its near perfect,in my opinion, condition). Thanks for the help Gondo

By rear sight--- Do you mean a half bead located about mid way down the rib? With full&full chokes, it will work just fine on the trap range.
Recoil is most noticed when I miss

Sounds like a real sweet heart!!! Get on the net at RST.com and order some low pressure shells in the appropriate length 2 3/4" or 2 1/2" to fit the chambers. Don't assume to shoot low brass Wal Mart stuff even though the gun will take it. Remember its very old and the wood what we call "the heading" where the stock butts up to the frame may not take the shock without spliiting. Sounds like an "A" grade with the later style scoll engraving. IMO this is the nicest style engraving for an "A" grade. Please put up some pictures as you may have the best example of that grade gun going. Love it, shoot it, and remember " they don't make um like that any more" . The RST shell won't cost more that maybe $10.00 a box which is about what you would pay for premium Winchester or Remingnton trap loads, and you will do the old girl[and your shoulder] a favour. LOVE IT !!!!! Lee.

I second the RST suggestion if you are unsure as to chamber length shoot the 21/2 length they break targets like a champ and will save the gun and your shoulder.

Thanks for the help, I was able to determine the chamber length by inserting a piece of hard plastic, the diameter of a 12 gauge shell into the chamber, as far as it would go, and measuring it to be 2 1/2 ". I have ordered ammunition from RST. Thanks again.
