I have a 12ga side by side Double Barrel Ansley H. Fox shotgun

I believe it is a Model A

It has Chromox Fluid Compressed Steel written on one barrel and Made By A.H.Fox Gun Co. Phila. Pa. U.S.A on the other

There is a 2 stamped on the barrel so I think that is the barrel weight

The serial numbers are 280XX

It also has Pat'd dates stamped on it as well:
Pat'd AUG. 16-04
AUG.1-05 OCT.17-05 JAN16-06
MAY 11-09 MAY 2-11 JUNE 11-12

Can someone help me with some information on this gun? How much it may be worth? (I know it all really depends on the condition but a ballpark price)

Thanks

We would need the complete serial number to etablish the grade and the original configuration. You can order a letter from Mr. Callahan of AHFCA for $40.00 which will give you all details available on your gun. Early A Grade Fox guns typically sell for between$800 - $2,000 depending on condition, gauge, etc.

Best Regards, George

The value of these old Ansley H. Fox, 12-gauge, A-Grade double barrel shotguns, the most common graded Fox guns, depends on condition, originality, condition, grip-style, condition, barrel length, and condition. A gun in the 280xx range would be around 1923 or 4, but a letter from Callahan is really the only way to know when it really left inventory. In 1923 the list price for an A-Grade was $62.00. Ansley H. Fox 12-gauges with 30-inch barrels were the most common, with 28-inch barrels a pretty close second. Barrels of 32-inch and factory original 26-inch barrels are less common and nowadays draw a bit more money. The half-pistol grip was the AHFGCo. standard for graded guns and most guns had that grip. Capped pistol grips were the next most common with straight grips the rarest. So, a 32-inch barrel A-Grade with a straight grip would draw somewhat to considerably more money then an equal condition gun with half-pistol grip and 30-inch barrels.

That link to Paul's gun says the earliest Gough-style A-Grade 12-gauge found is 21073. Since that was written weve found quite a few earlier Gough-style in the upper 20xxx range. The highest recorded serial I have for an early style A-Grade is AE-Grade 21061.
