Fox Collectors

Hello all,

This is my first post here and wanted to say "Hi" as well as ask a question.

Has anyone seen a Sterlingworth AH Fox SxS in 10 ga? I have a friend who has recently been given his grandfather's collection of firearms (and a pretty nice, eclectic collection I might add). He has not physically retrieved the firearms, but a list was given to him, of which is listed "Sterlingworth AH Fox, SxS 10 ga". I have looked high and low and have as of yet, not seen any listing or reference for one. This leads me to suspect that it may be rare, but I figured I'd ask the experts here.

Any thoughts?

...Makes me wonder if it's a .410 or perhaps a 16ga (misread the "6" as a "0").

no 410 also... it could be a 16.... only ever made in 12, 16, and 20.

It is possible that someone not up on shotguns put together the list and could mistake an ole Super Fox or Wildfowl sterly for a !0 Gauge because of the weight and frame size. Paul

Well, I just received a photo of it, and it's a Sterlingworth AH Fox and it's......

In 10 ga.

It has the "Fluid Compressed Steel" markings along the tops as wella s the "AH Fox" marking on the other barrel

There are no gauge markings anywhere on the thing, and a 12ga shell just rolls around in the chamber.

My friend then mic'ed the chamber (and took the picture) as he didn't have any 10 ga shells, and it mic's out at 19.7mm.

He mentioned that his Grandfather did mention to his Dad that it was an extremely rare gun, so not to sell it(?).


Any thoughts?

First thought: From the barrel stamp that is provided, yes, it is a Sterlingworth model. The Sterlingworth was the standard field grade model. They were not typically marked on the barrels as to gauge.
Second thought: There should be some clearance in the chamber for the gun to close and function properly.
Third: Fox Gun Co. has not been known to chamber guns in 10 bore.
Fourth: If the gun has been some how rechambered to 10 ga., I should think that a responsible gunsmith would have marked such on the barrels some where.
Fifth: Should your friend decide to shoot it I'd give him a wide berth and best wishes.
When you get the chance, just try a 10 ga. shell in it (2&7/8") and you'll see what you have there pretty quick.

Never Say Never, especially when it comes to guns. I have a Sterlingworth cape gun chambered 12 gauge x 45/70 that looks like a factory job. we both need a letter on our guns from Mr. Callahan.

OK, Curiosity was killing me. Checked the chambers in an L.C.Smith:.810, NID:.814,checked two Sterlingworths:.812. I don't use mm measurement much, but my tap drill chart reads20.5mm=dec. equiv..8071. Measurements were made with a telescoping gauge and 0-1 mic , it is accurate. If my mm equiv. is right, your pal has a normal 12 bore. Fred
