Removing rust, then preventing it

Hello,
Hoping for some advice on removing rust which quickly started consuming several of the internal parts of my Sterlingworth after a very wet day in the Northeast Kingdom area of VT last weekend. I noticed the morning after hunting all day in rain that the safety was very hard to work and figured it had rusted a little bit where I couldn't dry & clean the night before. Well, last night I broke down the action and pulled the stock to find a substantial amount of rust on the sears, sear spring, safety mechanism parts, screw threads, and a bit on the bolting/locking mechanism surfaces. I removed all of the parts that were rusted (except on bolting/locking mechanisms) and went at the rust with a brass brush and extra fine sandpaper after soaking in breakfree. I'm pretty sure I abated the rust on the parts I was able to remove from the action however, it was tough to get to the other rusted parts metioned above, but some success. I will work on the hard to reach places a bit more tonigt, but am curious if there is a particular product that can be used to stop rust in this application. Also, as for preventing future rust and to properly lubricate the internals in the sear, triggers, safety mechanism, and interior surface areas - what kind of grease/oil is recommended?
I probably won't be comfortable until I've had a professional strip, clean, and lubricate the action throuroughly, but that could take some time in my area (VA) so I just want to do the best I can for now.
Regards, and thanks for any advice.
Jerry
