Fox Collectors

Finally got it. Found out I had won the auction when I was driving back from the Southern. Was waiting for a fellow who worked for the auction house who told me he would hand carry it to Va as he was headed from SC to his home in Pa. Anyway, got it today. Attached are a few pictures that came from the auction house and a couple I took here at the house. Tale of the tape and Skeets is the gun is choke Ex Full and Mod (.040 and .022). 2 3/4" chambers. Weight is 6 lbs 4 oz. Engraving is amazingly sharp. The story on this gun is is was bought at Shumans. It was owned by the fellow who hand carried it to me as he and his dad shopped at Shumans all the time back in the day. They had quite a few Foxes at the auction and most of them came from him and his dad.

LOP is indeed 14 1/8", so I'll use a strap on pad to add a bit of length for now and decided if I want to add a period correct pad down the road. PS. Dimensions are what everyone always wants but seldom finds. 1 1/2" DAC, 2 1/2" DAH. Wowzer. Swings well.

Very nice, Tom! I’m sure you can put it to good work. Mine is a little weighted towards the muzzles which I like, tends to smooth things for me. Is it an extractor or ejector gun?

Is an extractor gun, which I actually like more then a gun with ejectors these days.

Ahhh Shumans! Back in the day I was a regular customer with Randy and Byron who was his counter man. I was mainly onto Model 70's though I came home with Model 99's and Model 12's too. About a 3 hour drive. I'd take a vacation day and we'd let the kids skip school. My wife and kids would usually shop at a Mall in Carlisle while I made the final leg to Shuman's. Reconnect on the way home with our buys. Once they spent a summer day with relatives at the Snyder County Fair, much too hot for our daughter who was then not quite a year old old and I took her along to Shumans along with feeding and changing diapers at the shop and in our a/c Merc Station Wagon. I got a nice early Model 99 Featherweight 250-3000 on that trip. Randy always had fine double-guns on a side rack and how I wish I had spent more time with them. Time marched on ..... the boys and I still have a few Model 70's we've hunted with for years but nowadays there are way more doubles here to play with year round. frank

Nice memories Frank. My oldest son played lacrosse in college and I knew every gun shop on the way to his school and visited a bunch in towns where he had away games.

I picked up a few Savage 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s over the years at great prices. I can still remember walking into one shop that had about a half dozen Ithaca SBT’s from a collection. All higher grades in pristine condition but more than I could swing with 2 kids in college at the same time.

I agree, ejectors are not worth the expense to me.

Nice gun!! A lot of nice guns passed through that shop on the back of Randy's house and later the shop at the edge of town. Always enjoyed chatting with Byron. Quite a few guns migrated from there to my gun room, including this 32-inch A-Grade, 16-gauge --
Back in the late 1980s I gained admission to Randy's safe to measure the dimensions of a 20-gauge Super-Fox frame for McIntosh. Don't think I've ever been anywhere else with as many Parker and graded L.C. Smith .410-bores.

I remember years ago going to a PGCA Annual Meeting at/as guests of the OCCA Show in Cleveland OH (?) where Randy displayed about all of his .410 and 28 ga. Parkers. The show committee put up theatre cords in front of his tables so onlookers wouldn't swoon and fall into his wares! Kevin

I too had the pleasure and privilege to get admission to Randy's walk in vault at his house where he kept all the M70's in his collection and all the other high end doubles. An awesome collection of some of the best.

And by the way, Byron used to work for Terry Turnbull at Terry's Creekside Gun Shop in Holcomb NY, near Rochester. When Randy went to the Rochester gun show, he would visit Creekside to buy some inventory for his shop in Newville PA. Terry's son Doug Turnbull was about 15 years old at the time. Randy talked Byron into relocating to Newville PA and work at his shop. Byron moved back to his home in nearby Naples, NY when he retired from Randy's shop.

Bill, thanks for the reminder and update on Byron. I do remember he told me that he previously worked at Creekside. As far as I know Randy still deals a bit with collectible guns but is not affiliated with his former shop which retained the business name and moved closer to Newville. frank

Yep, Byron Stirling (or Sterling) - great guy. Randy still sends out a very large list of some great guns, a lot of those M70's. I got a mid 1950's M70 in .308 for my son Chris. He has done very well with that gun in our woods behind the house. Including a gorgeous 144 point scored 8 point.

Tom, so sorry to get sidetracked on your thread. My humble apology. To keep it sort of 16 gauge related, I did sell to Randy a very high condition XE16 to get $$ to get a high end 16 gauge Parker with special damarcus barrels, the Terrell gun.
